IPAF Powered Access MEWP Operator | Category 3a & 3b (Classroom theory & Practical)

As the safe use of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) requires the learner to identifysafety notices and read and thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s instruction manual, literacy and language comprehension are important requirements for any MEWP user.  

Equally, theand use of MEWPs can be physically demanding, users should be physically fit and in good health and should, generally, not have problems with eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, fear of heights / vertigo, giddiness / difficulty with balance, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness.

• Regulations and guidance to include PUWER 98, LOLER 98, Work at Height 2005, ISO 18893 & BS8460
• MEWP categories
• Structural parts
• Familiarisation and pre-use inspections
• Platform movements, travel and safe operation
• Ground conditions
• Hazard awareness

Practical Training Modules

• Site risk assessment
• Introduction & familiarisation to the MEWP
• Major component identification
• Pre-use checks and inspections
• Safe operation of the machine including shut down procedures and pre-use function checks
• Route planning
• Machine operation practice
• Parking the machine
